They told us we were crazy. One grown ass man even (but zero women, I’ll add) told me he was “feeling anxious” because the theme of GORUCK Tribe in 2021 was SEEK PAIN.
What I’ve seen, as our ranks have grown to over 23,000, is that you get it. Life is a hard place, a painful place. We choose to harden ourselves, our bodies, our minds, our communities — our tribe — so that we can squeeze every last drop out of the time that we have. No matter the circumstances, we’re ready and we’re in it together.
As times grow tough, as 90% of the country seems to be buried in ice in the midst of a lingering global pandemic, our mindset serves us well. And we choose to pay that forward to others, to lead from the front. This is our path. I’ve loved seeing your snow rucks in Arctic temperatures, the group workouts you’ve organized with your kids decked out in clothes that probably took them 45 minutes to put on — I’ve loved seeing you all come together, outside, and smile. As New Year’s Resolutions are all but forgotten, the accountability we have all found in our group speaks volumes about the power of being a part of something bigger than ourselves.
Life is best when you go all in, no matter what. Each of the monthly themes will stress this point. Nobody gets out alive, so give it your best shot. If you’re scared of or new to rucking and sandbags, cold temperatures or doing things that are uncomfortable — you won’t be for long. The anticipation is always the worst part, and then it’s over and you’re all the better for it.
