Styling Tips and First Time Buyer Advice

Are you looking for your first hat purchase and are not confident on which style will suit? Or perhaps you’re looking to purchase a gift for a friend or loved one. Maybe you are just looking for some new inspiration. Whatever your reason for browsing our collections, we can help with your choice.

Our most frequently asked question; how should a hat be worn?

We tend to recommend to have the hat sit on the crown with the brim just above the eyebrows, and horizontal with the ground. rather than it being tilted back and perched on the back of head, This way it’s firmly fixed and not likely to blow away in any wind.

However wearing the hat on the back of the head can offer a really relaxed and modern look for a cool and stylish look.

Fedora, Trilby and Panama, so many options, which one is best for you?

The Fedora is the go-to for all occasions, it’s by far the easiest to wear if you’re not a hat person. It’s so versatile and with the option of Wool felt, Rabbit Fur or Beaver Fur there’s a style for everyone. With a wider brim than a trilby it offers great protection from both rain and sun and can be worn for all occasions from a relaxed family day out or lunch with friends, to a day at the races. See our Ascot collection for our race day options.

The Trilby
has a shorter brim and tends to be worn for a more formal occasion or to smarten up an outfit, working best with a smart coat and boots. Some famous wearers of trilby hats include James Bond, Frank Sinatra, Justin Timberlake and Harry Styles. See the Pork Pie, Henley or Kent for some of our most popular classic trilby hats.

The Panama is an easy, summer style made for warmer climates. Made from finely woven, Ecuadorian toquilla palm the panama is a lightweight and breathable hat making it perfect for warmer climates. Wider brim panama hats make an excellent sun shade perfect for days out sightseeing, or relaxing by the pool. Available in different grades, ranging from highgrade which can take the weavers weeks to weave, to a grade 2-3, there is a panama hat for everyone.

What are the key things to consider when purchasing a hat?

The first thing we would recommend considering is the material you would like your hat to be made from, this could be fur, wool or straw.

Secondly consider the use you will get from your hat, is it for an event? Or is it for every day wear?

Next think about the colour, what colours do you wear regularly? You want a hat that matches to your wardrobe and you feel comfortable to pair with outfits.

Finally choosing the right size is important to ensure your hat is best suited to your head, you can find our size guide and video here to make sure you measure correctly. Our hats come up true to size, however, should you find yourself in between sizes, we would advise to go up a size.
