Don’t Let Heat Exhaustion Turn Into a Life-Threatening Situation...

Avoid Sunstroke With These 10 Tips

Hi friend

It’s Eric from Indestructible Shoes.

Thousands of workers get sick each year because of heat exhaustion and it’s become a serious concern in the workplace.

Construction workers, landscapers and anyone who works outside should take extreme precaution.

If you aren’t careful...

Heat-related illnesses can prevent you from working. And in some cases, it can even turn fatal.

That’s why it’s so important to take extreme precautions when working outdoors.

Here are 10 tips to keep you protected from the sun:

#1: Acclimate Slowly

Working In The Sun

It generally takes five days of working at least 1½ hours per day for the body to become acclimated. Check weather forecasts for heatwave information.

#2: Dress for summer

Lightweight, light-colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight and helps your body maintain normal temperatures.

Long sleeves and pants are still necessary to protect your body from flying debris and other safety hazards.

#3: Wear a hat or sun visor

As a bonus, wear sunglasses for extra protection for your eyes!

#4: Eat small meals and salty snacks throughout the day

It’s crucial to stay nourished and hydrated by consuming nutrient-dense whole foods.

#5: Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids

Avoid drinking too much coffee or other dehydrating beverages to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.

#6: Do not take salt tablets unless specified by a physician

Too much salt can hurt your health in the long run. Salt tablets should only be taken if you have a sodium deficiency.

#7: Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas

Cooling Off
It’s crucial to take breaks to give your body the reset it needs from the sun.

#8: Use the buddy system to keep an eye on your co-workers

Have a co-worker who can check up on you (and vice versa) so you don’t unknowingly work for too long without taking a break.

#9: Some medications can make you more susceptible to heat illnesses

Make sure to speak with your doctor about any current treatments you’re taking that could potentially dehydrate you faster.

#10: Do the heaviest work during the coolest part of the day

Batching your work so you tackle the most physically challenging tasks when it’s not too hot can greatly help.

#Bonus Tip: It always works for me to take a garden hose and just lightly spray my head and shoulders with some water for a second.

Spray your head and shoulders lightly with some water
It's funny how only a few drops of water on your face and neck can refresh you so much on a hot day.

The only issue is that you can get your feet wet and you don't want that bad feeling of wet socks while working.

I can’t emphasize how important it is to avoid suffering from heat exhaustion at work…

Not only will it prevent you from receiving a paycheck, but it can also turn fatal if you don’t the right steps to protect yourself from the sun.
