MIXING WITH THE CB-1s
Hey there!
Ricky here. This time around, Iβm keen to speak to you about mixing; and in particular, mixing with headphones.
If youβve ever mixed music, youβll appreciate how much of a tricky business it can be. Every headphone, every studio monitor, every
speaker will tell you a different story about your mix.
It's no secret that when it comes to music production, the ideal setup would be a good pair of studio monitors. We know this and would never try to tell you otherwise. But it's also no secret that many of us donβt have the luxury of using large stereo speakers. Whether thatβs down to monetary reasons, or perhaps you work in an environment where large speakers just wouldnβt be appropriate.
So, here are some tips and tricks to get the most out of your mix when you only have headphones to work with.
1. Understand your headphoneβs frequency biases
Unlike large speakers, which can somewhat easily produce a flat, uncolored audio signal (no boosted bass, no bright treble), most closed-back studio headphones will have their own frequency biases, particularly in the upper midrange. Use your headphones day to day to understand what frequencies sound louder or quieter than others. Youβll need to accommodate these attenuations within your mix.
2. Be mindful of your stereo image
With headphones, it's all too easy to make your mix overly wide. With one speaker in either ear, we tend to split the stereo image between each driver and fail to consider the middle of the stereo image as much as we would on studio monitors. Compare your headphone mix and to another on your studio monitors, youβll notice how subconsciously we tend to overly widen the mix on headphones.
3. Be conscious of your low end
Headphones tend to underestimate the amount of bass in your mix, and the tendency is to
overcompensate for the lack of low end you hear. When you take your mix to your car or your consumer speakers, you may notice a much boomier, muddier mix than you did on your headphones. Donβt overdo it! Keep in mind that
less low-end on headphones may result in more
even low-end on more powerful speakers.

We strived to make a quality, affordable pair of headphones with the
CB-1s. We understand audio gear is expensive, so we wanted to offer headphones that could rival the audio quality of brands triple the price, in a package that every producer could afford.
