|September is “Healthy Aging Month” |
Check Out Our Top 5 Dos and Don’ts!
1) DON’T “Act Your Age”
Research suggests that feeling young may actually help make you look young and have the health of a younger person, too. Harvard scientist Ellen Langer has studied how the mind influences the body for over 30 years.
In one study, she had older men live at a retreat that was retrofitted to look like it did 20 years earlier, while the men pretended that they were living in that year. “Their minds were in the past. Their vision improved, their strength improved, and so on,” she says.
2) DO Travel!
A big part of our mission at HDIS is to help our customers live fuller and happier lives, by providing the security of appropriate personal care products. We want to help you get out and about – and travel wherever your heart may desire.
Not quite ready for liftoff?
Start small and visit a local park or community center, then set your sails from there!
3) DON’T Stop Learning
Whether you keep learning by reading books, or by attending classes – we humans are never too old to learn a new trick. Take for example Nola Ochs. In 2007, at the age of 95, Ms. Ochs graduated from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. We always can learn something new, at any age!
4) DO Volunteer
If you have time to spare and are able, volunteering can give you a new lease and perspective on life. Volunteering can increase your sense of community and allow you to make new friendships. Some popular places people volunteer include: hospitals, community gardens, tutoring programs, public schools, churches and local social organizations.
5) DO Move Your Body
Physical activity helps your health in a number of ways – reducing the risks associated with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and improving the way you feel. If you aren’t ready to go run a 5k – don’t worry! Any activity is better than no activity. You can start small and go from there. Some easy ways to start include: walking more, chair dancing classes or water therapy.
(Reminder: it is always a good idea to double check with a medical professional before beginning a new exercise program.)
