The book is divided into 3 sections that become progressively more challenging, both for the wind player and the rhythm section players. The rhythm section parts are completely written out, but also include chord changes to help students make the connection between fully notated parts and "chords and slashes".
One of the fundamental abilities that all great Jazz groups share is that they can play a swinging unison line so "together" that it sounds like one voice waving through time. The purpose of this book is to help beginning and intermediate ensembles develop this skill and zero in on the most basic form of Jazz—the BLUES.
