As we move through 2025, access to a free and open internet remains far from guaranteed in many parts of the world. From social media blackouts to full-scale internet shutdowns, digital freedom continues to be shaped, and often limited, by geography and policy.

Here’s a brief overview of current unfortunate realities:

🌍 Middle East: Persistent Restrictions on Communication

In countries like Iran, access to platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram remains heavily restricted, especially during election periods or political unrest. VoIP services are blocked across parts of the Gulf region, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, making encrypted communication a challenge for residents and expatriates alike. Governments in the Middle East frequently employ censorship surveillance and shutdowns to control online content and expression.

🌍 Africa: The Growing Use of Internet Blackouts

Nigeria has seen recurring platform bans and internet throttling since its 2021 Twitter ban, while Ethiopia continues to impose regional internet shutdowns in response to internal conflicts. These shutdowns disrupt everything from education to humanitarian efforts, affecting millions without warning.

🌍 Eastern Europe & Central Asia: Information Control Intensifies

In Russia, efforts to isolate the domestic internet have led to blocks on dozens of foreign news sites and platforms like Facebook and X. Kazakhstan and Belarus have also experienced politically motivated blackouts, especially during times of civil unrest or protest activity.

Common Tactics of Restriction

Across these regions, governments are increasingly using:

• Platform bans (messaging, news, social media)

• Keyword and DNS filtering (known as DNS poisoning)

• IP blacklisting and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)

• Complete internet shutdowns (kill switches)

These methods not only limit access to information but also hinder communication, education, and economic participation.
