Pocket Holes Can Be Tricky. Here's the secret to them

Hey friend,

How To Drill Cleaner Pocket Holes

Do your pocket holes come out perfectly?

If they’re not quite there, here’s how to clean them up.

Crank your speed up

At the top of most cordless drills, you have up to three speed settings you can use.

For cutting pocket holes, set your drill to its highest speed setting.

Use both hands

One hand will press the trigger and keep the drill from moving side to side.

The second hand should be on top.

This will be where you apply slow pressure to push the drill into the wood. And it will also keep the bit from bouncing up and down.

Though, that only really becomes a problem when drilling at an angle into face grain.

Let it hit full speed first

Take a second before you start drilling.

Make sure the bit’s spinning as fast as possible before it starts to cut the wood.

This is especially important when drilling multiple holes in a row.

After setup, put the bit in the guide hole.

Bottom out. Pull back a half inch or so.

Then pull the trigger and wait for the speed to max out before cutting back into the wood.

Also, make sure the batter is as fresh as possible. (Especially if it’s Ni-Cad)

Clean it up with a little sanding

There’s no shame in a little sanding game!

You’ll probably have to sand the surface to clean it up. Just make sure you’re moving WITH the direction of the tearout, towards the hole.

This ensures the fibers are smoothed in the right direction. (The opposite can lift them out, tearing up your surface instead)

Use a cordless drill or driver with a clutch

Your clutch is that little numbered ring on your drill.

Set it to provide just the right amount of torque so you won't overdrive your screw.

A dedicated driver with a chuck that will slip works even better.

And that’s it!
