“JOIN, OR DIE.” began as Ben Franklin’s warning, in 1754, during the French and Indian War — an argument made to the colonists and the British crown in support of the unification of the colonies against the French.

Instead, Britain saw a unified America as a threat — and sent its own armies. The colonists repurposed this symbol, the first viral political image in our nation’s history, as a symbol of our unity against British rule in the prelude to the Revolutionary War.
