The Making Of a Felt Hat

The process of making our Wool, Fur and Beaver hats.

At Christys’ London, craft is key. Since its founding in 1773, Miller Christy’s passion for impeccable quality and skilled craftsmanship has passed through generations of hatmakers, safeguarding Christys’ red and gold insignia as a symbol synonymous with fine traditionally crafted hats.

The felt hood is imported from Portugal in a rough cone shape and our highly skilled team will start off shaping and blocking the hood on machines over 100 years old. There are up to 28 different processes required to take the hood from its rough cone shape, to the blocked and shaped hat ready for trimming. 

Once the hat has been blocked it will then be dried for 12 hours to hold the shape we will then trim the hat before going up to our seamstresses who will add the lining, sweatband and ribbon on the outside hat to the highest of quality.

The whole process from start to finish takes between 5-7 days.
